Operation

Simple and convenient operation is important for the saw. This results in higher performance. We offer different versions. The classic operation via a hand lever for the hydraulics and a joystick for the saw operation. Since electric valves have the disadvantage that they cannot be operated sensitively, we developed our Profiline control system a few years ago together with hydraulic and electronics specialists. Here we work exclusively with so-called “proportional valves”, which can be very finely controlled.

Z160 S Bedienung

With the joystick, the saw head of our log band saw can be moved in all four directions (forward-backward-up-down) with one hand. We use a frequency converter for the infinitely variable feed. This allows the feed speed to be very finely controlled.

If a carriage unit is used, the pre-cutter, the hydraulic adjustment of the saw blade guide and the board safety device can also be operated from the joystick using buttons and rocker switches.

Almost all of the log band saws we supply are equipped with a positioning control for setting the desired cutting thickness. This works faster and more accurately than manual positioning of the saw head. The PLC control is available for even greater convenience.

Our log band saws use a control system with a touchscreen, which has been tried and tested for many years and can also be used in mobile applications without any problems. A mechanical ammeter is no longer required. All functions are operated via the control unit. It is possible to save various measurements on demand, store a customer memory and much more. The operator has all the information on a central control panel. The control system can be switched to the respective national language at the touch of a button.

If the vertical supports are higher than the saw blade, the feed is blocked to prevent cutting. This is displayed to the operator on the screen.

For various reasons, the operator may forget to empty the chip container. This results in the chips contaminating the cast wheels, which leads to tooth root cracks. To prevent this, an automatic emptying system can be installed. The chip container is then emptied automatically at a point specified by the operator. The number of emptying cycles can also be set by the operator.

More Information

We first used this in our log band saws in 2001. With automatic feed control, the feed speed is regulated via the current consumption of the main motor.

Another feature that makes work easier and increases performance for the operator is the return motion via foot switch. When a cut has been completed and the saw head of the log band saw has been raised, the operator can trigger the return motion using the foot switch. This leaves both hands free to do other things, such as programming a new dimension. The saw carriage is slowed down and stopped by a length measurement sensor. This prevents the saw head from hitting the stops hard.

We equipped our log bandsaws with a fully automatic system back in 2001. This increases productivity enormously, particularly for production companies, especially when cutting slats. It is also possible to manage with fewer operating personnel. As the safety of our customers is important to us, this is guaranteed by a light barrier.

BN 110 S Vollautomatik

It is always necessary to make adjustments, especially when customizing control units. This can be done by installing a modem from the factory. This allows changes to be made quickly and cost-effectively.

Profiline control

The operating comfort of this saw is at the highest level, which is otherwise only known from large sawmills. Two joysticks, which the operator can flexibly assign different functions as required, enable optimum and therefore efficient work processes. By using proportional valves in the hydraulics, we achieve high movement speeds with a high degree of sensitivity at the decisive moment in order to handle the high-quality material gently.

Advantages of the new control system:

  • The hydraulic valves are located directly on the consumer – this enables the functions to respond quickly and directly, even under extreme conditions.
  • The hydraulic lines are cross-section-optimized so that all movements are carried out at optimum speed and with minimum losses.
  • The hydraulic pump only runs when required.
This results in energy savings of up to 50 % for the hydraulics.
  • A frequency converter controls the motor of the hydraulic pump and thus ensures the optimum flow rate for all functions.
  • All functions are freely programmable and can therefore be individually adapted to the operator. If required, several different (operator-specific) joystick assignments can be saved.
  • The active joystick assignment is shown on the 15″ display.
  • Log handling or sawing operation is carried out ergonomically via the same joysticks by simply switching over.

Base frame

We make no compromises when it comes to the base frame. We manufacture this exclusively with a continuous and solid beam. The base frame consists of a double T-beam. The Zenz saw carriage runs protected within the double T-beam. This means that the log supports and the running rail of the Zenz saw carriage are on one frame and an exact cut is guaranteed. Stainless steel shafts on the solid cross beams prevent chips and bark from being left behind and prevent the oak from turning blue. The base frames are supplied in any length according to customer requirements. The frame can be supplied in a width of 820mm or 1150mm.

Optimum accessibility

The standard downstand beam is located directly under the double T-beams. The energy chain is on the log lifter side. This means that the helper is directly at the log during board removal. The slanted support legs also make it easy for the operator to eject slabs and sawn timber by turning the log.

Saw head

The Zenz saw head is characterized by several features. It is set at an angle, which results in a smoother cut-in and cut-out and a higher cutting performance. The Zenz bevel saw head was first supplied by us in 1996. The saw blade runs on cast steel rollers with a diameter of 850 mm, each of which is supported twice by large-dimensioned cylindrical roller bearings. Cast steel is characterized by a considerably longer service life compared to grey cast iron. The solid square or rectangular tubes of the saw blade tensioning system are precisely guided on a total of 16 brass plates with large bearing spacing. This makes it possible to saw weaker logs with less pressure without the saw blade running (out of the wheels). This extends the service life of the saw blade.

More Information

We use a center clamping system to tension the saw blade. The tension is applied evenly on both sides via a centerpiece.

The copper scrapers are arranged in such a way that the chips are immediately removed to the outside and do not fall onto the saw blade.
Large felt plates keep the cast iron wheel clean and distribute the lubricant evenly.
Special baffle plates for the sawdust prevent turbulence.
This means that no chips remain in the guards.
All copper scrapers and felt scrapers work with gravity.
This prevents malfunctions caused by defective springs.
The lubricant is automatically switched on via a solenoid valve when the main motor is started and can be precisely metered via a valve.
A large reservoir eliminates the need for frequent refilling.
Pressure lubrication is also available on request, which also lubricates the two cast wheels and the saw blade from the outside.

The feed is provided by a cable drive on both sides, which prevents the Zenz saw head from jerking during load changes.
We achieve stepless adjustment by using a frequency converter that has been tried and tested in electrical engineering for many years.
It is controlled via the same joystick as the height adjustment.
This means that the log band saw can be operated with one hand from a central control station.
We offer a number of special features for the feed on request.
These range from automatic forward and reverse to foot switch and fully automatic operation.

The saw blade is driven by an electric brake motor.
This has the advantage over a combustion engine that it is quiet, emission-free, durable and vibration-free.
The generously dimensioned control cabinet is easily accessible from the outside on the mobile log band saws, yet is mounted on the base frame for protection.
A removable protective cover is available on request.

The chip hopper collects the sawdust and empties it hydraulically at any point.
Automatic emptying is also possible with our PLC control system.

More Information

This has a very stable design and is additionally reinforced in the upper area by gusset tubes.
Lateral pressure rollers on the base frame prevent the saw head from swinging up in the upper cutting area.
The carriage runs underneath the log support on large rollers.
This has the advantage that rollers no longer interfere with the log bed.
The internal rollers are protected from dirt.
In addition, the saw carriage runs on the same frame as the logs.
This ensures a precise and dimensionally accurate cutting pattern.
The tracks can be lubricated automatically using a lubrication pump.

The height of the saw head is adjusted via a geared motor and two roller chains so that the saw carriage is guided evenly.
Two ball bearings with wear rings ensure precise guidance of the vertical carriage.
The running surface of the horizontal carriage is reinforced.
In addition, the vertical carriage is fixed laterally by large, adjustable guide pins.
This allows the saw blade to run tension-free and therefore ensures a long service life.
This enables absolutely precise positioning via a joystick on the control stand.
Today, almost all of our log band saws are equipped with an electronic positioning control.

The Wimmer saw blade is guided precisely by two adjustable Chaco guides.
The material of the blocks is very low-wear and has been used successfully in log band saws for decades.
The guide itself is very stable and is welded to the band guide arm and not bolted.
This prevents the guide from moving in the event of incorrect operation.
The band guide arm is guided on brass plates and tensioned with a prism, which ensures absolute precision of the guide.
A copper scraper serves as the first chip deflector.
The second chip deflector is a wear-free stainless steel scraper mounted on the main frame.
The saw blade guide can also be adjusted hydraulically.

In the case of high-tension timber, the sawn timber may shift to the left when it is driven out of the tree.
To prevent this, a board stop can be installed.
This is a hydraulically adjustable stop opposite the sawing side.
This board safety device is particularly suitable for cutting roof battens.

More Information

The pre-cutter uses a carbide-tipped circular saw blade to remove soiled bark and stones on the infeed side of the saw blade, thereby significantly increasing the service life of the saw blade.
It is attached directly to the saw head and has a short swivel arm.
As a result, it always maintains its exact position.
The cutting depth can be adjusted for different types of wood.
A spring-loaded suspension protects it from damage in the event of incorrect operation.
It is also possible to mount a left-hand pre-cutter on the saw side.

Hydraulics

Our hydraulic system consists of tried and tested components. The hydraulic cylinders have standard dimensions. This means that sealing kits can be procured on site. We use a special oil. This has a very wide viscosity range. This means that working at very low or high temperatures is no problem.

All components such as the drive motor, hydraulic pump, filter and tank are housed and protected in the hydraulic unit developed by us.
The hydraulic motor with 3 or 4 kW is a low-speed motor.
This ensures a long service life for the pump. Our hydraulic pump does not have an aluminum housing, as is usually the case, but a cast housing that can withstand peak pressures of over 300 bar. Here, too, we focus on operational safety and durability.

The log turner on our log band saw can be used to both turn and clamp the log. Thanks to its solid construction, it can also withstand extreme loads. The lifting cylinder is on the inside and therefore protected against damage. Replaceable wear bushes or plates are fitted to all moving parts.

The chain rotator of our log bandsaw is one of our own designs and is also protected by a patent. The advantage of our chain turner lies in its triple function:

  • Turning with the chain
  • Turning with the claws
  • Clamping the trunk

The position of each arm can be adjusted independently. This means it can be optimally adapted to each log. It is also possible to use the chain turner to eject the cut material.

The chain turner is patented under no. 10 2005 054 421

More Information

The log lifters on our log band saw are mounted on a solid shaft and made from a single piece without welds. This means that even the heaviest logs are no problem. A special design enables the installation of double-acting cylinders. This eliminates the need for failure-prone return springs and ensures rapid lowering without any problems, even in extremely cold conditions. Naturally, the log lifter is designed in such a way that there is no risk of injury. Removable lifting arms are also possible. The lifting arms can also be offset for different log lengths. The advantage of this method is that only the lifting arm has to be moved and not the complete log lifter with support leg and cylinder.

More Information

The vertical supports of our log band saw are necessary as a stop and for setting up the sawn timber at right angles. With a wall thickness of 8 mm, they can withstand even the heaviest loads. They move in replaceable guides made of special plastic. The angle of the vertical supports is adjustable. An integrated roller makes it easier to turn large logs. In conjunction with our PLC, the vertical supports can be protected against cutting (vertical support monitoring).

The level compensating slides for aligning the log on the saw are absolutely essential. On the one hand, the individually controllable leveling slides are used to adjust the height of the log. On the other hand, the log can also be clamped by the claws and, if necessary, pulled downwards, which is very important for tension-rich wood in order to produce dimensionally accurate sawn timber. The claws are mechanically adjustable to the level blade. Hydraulic height adjustment is also available on request. The claws are spring-mounted at the bottom. This prevents damage if the claws are extended when loading the log. To protect sensitive wood, it is possible to screw aluminum protective jaws onto the claws.

More Information

The log roller on our log band saw moves the log forwards or backwards. This is necessary to position the log so that it rests on as many supports as possible and the hydraulic components can be optimally utilized. The log rollers are also hydraulically height-adjustable and can also be used to align the log. The log rollers are often also used to transport the finished sawn timber to the rear (e.g. onto a roller conveyor).

Mobile equipment

Mobile sawyer Christian Schwarz makes his work easier with numerous additional features. His Zenz saw “BN 110 S” is equipped with almost everything we have to offer. The Swabian mobile sawyer from Winterbach near Stuttgart has even had a crane bolted onto the saw chassis. This means that he can work in sawmills without additional support staff. Christian Schwarz can spare his back when working for private individuals, even if no forklift or tractor front loader is available.

The solid support beam of the base frame eliminates the need for time-consuming alignment of our log band saws.
Eight mechanical screw supports ensure a stable hold, even if the ground is not ideal.

Since 2000, we have been offering the option of a folding extension for the mobile version, which can be swiveled mechanically or hydraulically.
The advantage is that the drive cables do not need to be changed, which reduces set-up time. Of course, plug-in extensions are also available in all desired lengths.

To shorten the set-up time, the folding extension can also be folded down hydraulically. This is done from the operator’s platform and is therefore very convenient.

A height-adjustable drawbar is also available on request.

Due to the stability of our log band saw and the wide range of equipment options, the weight is usually over 3.5 tons.

Our weather protection cabins have proven their worth for mobile saws. These are very stable and do not need to be folded down for transportation. The windows are made of safety glass and always remain clear. The saw does not become longer, as the closed cover is flush with the end of the machine. In strong winds, the tarpaulin supplied as standard can be hooked into the cover. Another advantage is that the operator’s eyes are protected from sawdust in headwinds. The controls, joystick and control units are also protected from both rain and vandalism.

More Information

When sawing resinous wood such as larch, sawdust can stick to the tooth of the saw blade.
As a result, free cutting is no longer possible and the saw blade runs.
The saw blade and the cast wheels also become dirty, which can cause cracks.
Water has always proven to be the best resin remover.
Our water lubrication is very effective because it is distributed over the entire width of the saw blade.
You can supply the water via a container or directly via a tap.
The PLC can be used to control whether the water lubrication should always be active when the saw blade is running, when moving forwards and backwards or only when sawing.

Wasserschmierung Chacko

In some cases, normal mixing with water is not sufficient for woods with a high and highly adhesive resin content.
For these cases, we can offer you our water lubrication with pump.
The saw blade is sprayed with water using two nozzles (from below and above) by means of a pump.
This makes it possible to loosen even stubborn resin deposits.

Wasserschmierung mit Pumpe

For customers who cut slats, we have built a special saw bed with a vacuum holder for the log.
This makes it possible to make the last cut at 8 mm (otherwise 24 mm).
This vacuum holder is available in two versions, either integrated into the base frame of our log band saw or as a removable unit.

Vakuumhalterung
Vakuumhalterung

An additional hydraulic unit with control valves on the saw head increases convenience.
This means that all functions can be operated during sawing operation using a multifunction joystick.
Each individual control unit is fitted with non-return valves, making them absolutely leak-proof.
There is no need for a stopcock for the blade tension.
There are also no hydraulic hoses in the energy chain.

For users who cut a lot of thick timber, it may be necessary for the boards to be too wide for the edger or for some other reason.
This is where our rip cutter comes in handy, allowing the boards to be split at any point.
It is also possible to use two rip cutters.

More Information

In companies that take their sawn timber from our log band saw with vacuum lifters, it is necessary to brush off the sawdust.
This is also necessary for hardwood logs that are dried, as otherwise the sawdust can cause stains.
For this purpose, we have developed a board brush that can be fed hydraulically either manually or automatically.

Bürste
Bürste
Bürste

It is sometimes necessary to open up the leaf guide further at the end of the trunk, especially in the case of strong root growth.
This can be done conveniently from the operator’s stand.

A lubricant pump instead of normal lubrication has the advantage of eliminating the need for drip oilers.
Consistent lubrication is also guaranteed regardless of the outside temperature.
The lubricant does not drip directly onto the cast iron wheel, but is distributed evenly over the entire width of the cast iron wheels by a felt, as well as onto the outside of the saw blade.
The rollers of the saw head are also lubricated.
The dosage can be set separately for each lubrication point.

Cold hands are often a problem in winter.
We can solve this by allowing warm hydraulic oil to flow through the protective bracket of the control units.

A laser mounted at saw blade height indicates the set cutting height at the front and on the long side of the log.
However, the laser cannot be used outdoors.

A manual vertical support can be used for cutting very short logs.
This is then raised by hand as required.

In the case of tension-rich timber, the sawn timber may shift to the left when it is driven out of the tree. To prevent this, a board stop can be installed. This is a hydraulically adjustable stop opposite the cutting side. This board stop is particularly suitable for cutting roof battens.

Your questions
our answers

A general distinction is made between diameters and cutting widths. The diameter is the maximum dimension of the trunk. The height of a trunk can be greater than its width, as the roots can grow on one side. We have different types of saws. Our largest saw has a passage of 140 x 160 cm. The cutting width indicates the width up to which a board can be sawn. With our types Z140 and Z160, 125 cm is possible.

In the stationary sector, all cutting lengths are generally possible. For mobile saws, however, the road traffic regulations (StVO) regarding length, turning circle and other aspects must be observed. For one customer, for example, we have manufactured a saw with a cutting length of 30 m for special applications. Shorter cutting lengths from 40 cm can also be realized at the customer’s request.

This is the most frequently asked question, but also the most difficult to answer, as many factors play a role. Important influencing factors are the dimensions of the logs and, in particular, the dimensions of the sawn timber. The type of log processing, whether manual or automatic, and the number of helpers are also decisive. After numerous discussions with our customers, who saw a wide variety of assortments, we consider an average daily output of 20 to 30 solid cubic meters to be realistic.

Yes, many of our customers are on the move and saw the wood on site.

The throughput width is significantly greater: while a frame saw is usually limited to 70 cm, a band saw can reach up to 160 cm.

At 2 mm, the kerf is significantly narrower with the band saw than with the gang saw (4-5 mm), which results in less material loss. This can mean about one more board per log.

As only one board is sawn at a time, the quality can be checked after each cut. As a result, the trunk is optimally utilized both qualitatively and quantitatively.

In order to saw different sawn timber dimensions, the saw blades must be mounted in a different position on the sash gang saw. This involves a great deal of work. Each dimension can be cut individually with the log band saw.
